PLANT SYSTEMS PHYSIOLOGY LAB

Alternative crops for Korea
We aim to localize the foreign plants for future food and horticultural values.
Current interest
Brassica carinata
Cynodon dactylon
How can we develop the effective alternative crop plants for Korea?

Climate change is extreme, thus many of the crops or horticultural plants are at risk. For example, Korean cabbage which is a cool-season-loving crop is suffering from the higher temperature and humidity especially in the Kimchi season. Thus, we are to analyze the physiological features of B. carinata which has already been used as a leafy vegetables in African area to be applied in Korean farm environment. In similar context, C. dactylon is another target to be tested for the future horticultural plant in Korea as well. To do that, we are currently ongoing following 'seemingly distinct studies'.
1. Development of bioinformatic/AI included pipeline which can be applied in the non-model plants
- Allows us to reveal the target physiological feature or genes to develop the Koreanized crop plants
- Already established pipelines : SPPE (Jung et al., Biotech, 2025), Orangebark (Kim et al., JPB, 2025), Climate feature identification of target phenotype associated climate features (Choi et al., Plants, 2026).
- Ongoing pipelines : ns-GWAS (Park et al., in preparation), General gene target identification through association study from numerous plant species (Lee et al., in preparation; Kang et al., in preparation)
2. Basic physiological study with seedling stages
- Allows us to set the easiest platform phenotype to select the superior clones
- Pilot studies were performed with closest neighboring spceis
